Abstract

This research examines the cognitive conception of meaning in Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani’s Dala’il al-I‘jaz in order to show how meaning is formed as a mental construct based on syntactic organization, context, and situation. The study defines the key concepts of conception, cognition, cognitive conception, and meaning, then analyzes al-Jurjani’s view of meaning and its relation to interpretation. It concludes that meaning in al-Jurjani’s theory is not based on isolated words, but on relations within discourse, and that nazm is the main principle of meaning production.
