| Description: | Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) is a medicinal and aromatic plant that has been used since ancient times in traditional medicine due to its numerous therapeutic properties. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the methanolic extract of Salvia rosmarinus, a plant widely distributed and commonly used in Algeria and throughout the world. The aerial parts of the plant (leaves and stems) were collected from the Mila region and subjected to cold maceration in methanol to extract the different secondary metabolites.Phytochemical screening of the methanolic extract revealed the presence of several secondary metabolites, particularly flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins, coumarins, quinones, and terpenoids. The total polyphenol content was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu method and was found to be 151.963 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g of extract, with gallic acid used as the reference standard. The antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, with ascorbic acid as the standard reference. The results showed that the methanolic extract exhibited moderate antioxidant activity, with an IC₅₀ value of 151.74 μg/mL, compared with 18.9 μg/mL for the reference standard. Regarding antibacterial activity, the methanolic extract exhibited inhibitory activity only against Bacillus subtilis, producing inhibition zones of 15.59, 15.12, and 10.54 mm at concentrations of 400, 200, and 100 mg/mL, respectively. No antibacterial activity was observed against Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Escherichia coli. |
