Abstract

This study examines self-representation in the novels of Ayman Al-Atoum through the dual lenses of cultural and mythological criticism. It argues that the narrative self transcends confessional depiction, functioning instead as a complex hermeneutic space where cultural narratives, psychological structures, and discourses of resistance intersect. This analysis reveals an intricate matrix of cultural codes that shape the modern Arab self, suspended between hegemony and dissent within postcolonial and repressive contexts. Furthermore, the study explores myth as a symbolic language enabling the self to oscillate between concealment and disclosure. This dual approach deconstructs conventional modes of self-awareness and bodily consciousness, rearticulates their relationship to authority and the sacred, and opens new interpretive frameworks for understanding identity, knowledge, and meaning
